How to Remove a Car Battery

Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery

Your car battery is incredibly important to help start up your vehicle, keep it running, and power all the electrical components. However, when it comes to removing your car battery to check for signs of potential damage, you must do so safely because it could be dangerous. Read on to learn more about removing a car battery with our service team at Welborn GMC Of Cartersville near Rome.

Preparation

Batteries can hold enough charge to potentially be deadly, so be sure to wear insulated gloves and protective goggles. Before you start your car, make sure to turn off your vehicle as there may be sparking or inflammable agents. You should also:

  • Get some zip ties to keep the battery cables in place. If they touch, it can create sparks and/or create a fire hazard.
  • Cover the positive cable with a cloth to avoid the risk of metal-to-metal contact.
  • Make sure to remove jewelry such as watches, bracelets, and watches to prevent you from getting a shock when touching the battery.
  • Ensure you’re in a well-ventilated area to prevent exposure to harmful gases.

If your terminal is fused, there is a special battery cable removal tool to loosen it. Be sure to check out our parts department in our Acworth dealership today.

Removal

Once you are properly prepared to disconnect the battery post, follow these steps to safely remove his battery:

  • Find the negative terminal, which is a black plastic cover on a minus sign and is located either on or nearby the post.
  • Hold the bolt head of the negative terminal with either a plier or a wrench and hold it still.
  • Using other pliers or wrenches to remove the nut, pull off the negative cable and secure it away from the battery.
  • Do the same for the positive terminal, and make sure that the two battery cables don’t touch each other.
  • Make sure that the batteries are held by a securing bracket, and then use the pliers or wrench to take the screws and bolts that hold it in place.
  • Lift the battery straight from the bracket (note that the battery might weigh up to 40 pounds)
