If you’re looking to give your daily Rome commute a boost and leave gasoline behind, consider upgrading to electric power! Electric vehicles, or EVs, are more available–and affordable–than ever around the world, with almost every popular automaker including hybrid and electric models in their lineups. GMC recently announced two all-new electric variants of crowd-favorite vehicles–the Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV! If you’ve never driven an electric car before but you’re interested in learning more, you probably have a lot of questions. For example, how much does it cost to charge an electric car? Is charging an electric car cheaper than gas? Welborn GMC Of Cartersville has all the details on electric car charging in the guide below – check it out!
When charging an EV, you have two options: charging at home or on the go. If you charge at home, there are two levels of charging you can take advantage of. Level 1 charging plugs right into the same three-prong outlets that power everything from your laptop to your microwave. Most electric vehicles ship with a complimentary Level 1 charger. However, since laptops and microwaves are a lot smaller than cars, Level 1 charging is also by far the slowest method of charging.
Most EV drivers use Level 2 charging at home, since it’s quick, efficient, and designed specifically for car charging. General Motors estimates that you can get from 20% to 100% charge in around 16 hours with Level 2 charging. While there’s no set cost, experts estimate that it costs anywhere from $500 to $1,000 for an electrician to install a Level 2 charger.
Setting aside installation costs, how much does it cost to actually charge an electric car? That depends on how much you pay for electricity each month. In Georgia, power costs between 5 and 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, at least according to recent records. If the battery capacity of the GMC Hummer EV is 217 kW, then it would cost around $21.70 to bring it up to full capacity overnight. But you won’t be paying this every night – GMC estimates a range of up to 350 miles on the new Hummer EV!
If you’re out and about around Acworth, you can recharge your EV at a public charging station–these tend to offer standard Level 2 charging or Level 3 DC fast charging. Public chargers are typically more expensive to use than home chargers, particularly if they’re powerful fast chargers designed to top off your battery in as little as thirty minutes. The cost to fully charge an electric car in public is calculated either by hour or by kilowatt and varies heavily based on location and type of charger–in fact, some chargers are free! For example, charging stations in Georgia from PlugShare cost about $2-5 per hour to use. Meanwhile, Electrify America charging stations charge between 19 and 37 cents per minute for fast charging.
